Following the Rena oil spill the Maketu coastline was impacted by heavy fuel oil. I took two month off from writing my thesis and volunteered my time to help organise the clean up around Maketu. The oil was thick and almost imposible to remove off the rocks until we discovered spill sorb an organic peat moss which ingests the oil and makes it much easier to remove. The local community funded the purchase of spill sorb as the government would not recognize its effectiveness.
